UMass Tennis Is 2-0 After Beating Middlebury

Amherst, Mass. - After losing the doubles point, the UMass women's tennis team roared back, sweeping all six singles matches for a 6-1 win over Middlebury on Friday. The Minutewomen are 2-0 and face Amherst on Monday.
Junior Michele Spies (Stuttgart, Germany) downed Middlebury's Amy Roche, 6-2, 6-3, at number one. Sophomore Masha Pozar (Ljublijana, Slovenia) beat Elizabeth Emery 6-1, 6-1, at number two. Senior Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) bested Amy Berkman 6-3, 6-2, at number three. At number four, freshman Stephanie Gimenez (Alphaville, Brazil) swept Elizabeth Stone 6-3, 6-3. At number five, Jana Bartoloni (Quincy, Mass.) topped Clare Burke 6-3, 6-2. Senior Susan Johnson (Arnold, Md.) beat Chandra Kurien 6-3, 6-2.
In the double contests, Middlebury won two of the three matches. UMass won at number two with Spiess and Gimenez trouncing Middlebury's Stone and Kurien, 8-1. Middlebury won at number one with Roche and Emery over Iwanowicz and Johnson, 8-5, and at number three with Burke and Berkman defeating Bartoloni and freshman Carly Ludmer (Demarest, N.J).
The Minutewomen are off to a fast start this fall, after claiming both the singles and doubles titles last weekend at the Quinnipiac Invitational and winning the first match this past Wednesday with a 7-0 whitewashing of Connecticut.
