Box Score

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse field hockey team (5-6) scored two second half goals en route to a 2-0 win over Massachusetts (3-8) Friday night at Coyne Stadium on the Syracuse campus. UMass sophomore goalkeeper Becky Letourneau (Greenfield, Mass.) made six saves in the loss. The Minutewomen were out-shot 9-2 and did not register a shot on goal.

UMass had control of the ball for the first nine minutes in the Syracuse zone, but could not get a shot off. The Orange got possession and earned back to back corners with just under 25 minutes left. Letourneau made a save on the first one and then the UMass defense broke up the second corner before Syracuse could get a shot off.

UMass freshman Erin Parker (South Deerfield, Mass.) got the only shot of the half for the Minutewomen, but it went wide. Syracuse also had just one shot and the only two penalty corners of the half.

The Orange came out in the second half and pressured Letourneau. They got five corners in the first eight minutes. Letourneau made three saves, but on the final corner, Syracuse scored off a deflection. Michelle Sola ripped a shot off the corner and it was deflected in the net for her first goal of the season.

UMass had a chance to score right before Syracuse did. Parker streaked down the right side and tried to slide a pass across the circle to freshman Katelyn Orlando (Manchester, Mass.), but it was just a little too long on the far post.

Syracuse continued to deny the Minutewomen any scoring chances and tallied an insurance goal with just over three minutes left. Paige Sullivan scored the goal right in front of Letourneau for her team-high seventh score of the year.

With 29 seconds l;eft, UMass got its first penalty corner of the game, but senior Katelyn Woolfrey (Somerset, Mass.) had her shot blocked by a defender in front. UMass registered just two shots in the game, but both were not on goal. Syracuse had nine shots and held the edge in penalty corners, 7-1. Letourneau made six saves for the Minutewomen, while Syracuse goalkeeper Heather Hess did not face a shot.

The Minutewomen open up Atlantic 10 Conference play on Friday, Oct. 7 at Richmond. Live stats will be available through Gametracker at www.umassathletics.com. Game time is 3:00 PM. The Spiders have won the A-10 title the last three years.
