AMHERST, Mass. - Harvard tallied goals in each half as the Crimson defeated the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team 2-0 at Rudd Field on Sunday afternoon. The loss was the first at home for UMass who drops to 3-5-0 overall. Harvard, playing its fifth game in nine days, improves to 4-1-1 on the season with the win.
The Crimson jumped on the scoring board early as Jeremy Tchou put Harvard up 1-0 at the 6:26 mark. Tchou controlled a failed clear attempt in the UMass box as the ball was headed by several different players before landing in front of Tchou. Tchou's strike from 10 yards out was a low, hard shot that beat UMass redshirt freshman keeper Zack Simmons (Durham, N.H.) in the bottom left corner.
Harvard nearly scored again in the first half on a penalty kick by Brian Charnock. Charnock went toward the bottom left corner with his shot, but Simmons was able to dive over deflecting the ball just past the post.
At the 76:14 mark of the game, brothers Nicholas and Anthony Tornaritis joined up to score the insurance goal for Harvard sealing the win. Anthony Tornaritis found a streaking Nicholas who loaded up a shot from 10 yards out to beat Simmons.
The overall shots were fairly even as Harvard outshot UMass 15-to-11 for the game. The Crimson, however, were able to put 11 of their shots on goal, while UMass managed just three which were all stopped by Harvard keeper Ryan Johnson.
Simmons made nine saves on the day, while Johnson made three.
UMass will next host Boston University on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. Admission is free to all at Rudd Field.
