Field Hockey Incoming Freshman Class Announced

AMHERST, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts field hockey Head Coach Patty Shea has announced the five members of the class of 2005. Brigitte Leonard, Lauren Gillespie, Katelyn Orlando, Erin Parker and Mary Shea will all enroll at UMass this fall. All five are from New England with four of them hailing from Massachusetts.
"The members of our incoming class have all been team captains and hail from very successful programs," said Shea. "Their character, personalities, athletic and academic excellence will drive UMass Field Hockey up the ladder of success."
Gillespie is a native of Casco, Maine and attended Lake Region High School. She was a four-year varsity player. Her senior year accolades included first-team All-State, All-Academic team. and All- Western Maine Conference. As a senior captain, she tallied 18 goals and nine assists. She finished her high school career with 33 goals which ranked third all-time. She was also a three-year softball player and member of the National Honor Society.
Leonard is a native of Dedham, Mass. and played field hockey at Dedham High School. Leonard tallied 40 career goals in two seasons and was a member of last year's undefeated State Championship team. Her team went 18-3-1 this past season and were Bay State League champions. She finished her senior season with 21 goals and 16 assists to rank third in the league in scoring. She was an All-League All-Star as well as team MVP.
Orlando is a native of Manchester, Mass. She was a three-year varsity field hockey player at Manchester-Essex High School. At Manchester-Essex, she was a Boston Herald All-Scholastic team member, one of the "Best of 60 In Massachusetts", two-time team MVP, three-time Cape Ann League All-Star and three-time All-League. As a junior, she ranked in the top four for scoring in Eastern Massachusetts. Orlando also played four years of varsity softball and three years of varsity basketball.
Parker is from South Deerfield, Mass., and attended Frontier Regional High School. She was a six-year varsity field hockey, basketball and softball player. Parker was a three-time first-team All-Western Massachusetts selection and All-League pick. She was also a three-time member of the National Honor Society and the recipient of the Smith College Book Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement and Leadership. Parker holds her school record for points scored with 110, 43 of them coming during her senior campaign. As a senior, she scored the game-winning goal in the Western Massachusetts final game. Parker was her team's leading scorer as a junior and senior and was also a two-time recipient of the team's Best Offensive Player award.
Shea is a native of Foxboro, Mass. At Foxboro High School, Shea was a captain and team MVP her senior years. Shea was also picked as one of the "Best of 60 In Massachusetts." She was a two-time Sun Chronicle all-star and Hockomock All-League selection. She also ran track during the winter and spring seasons and was a captain of each squad.
The Minutewomen will open the 2005 season Aug. 27 when they host Fairfield at Garber Field.
