AMHERST, Mass. - Trevor Ziegler, one of the top freestyle sprinters in Maryland, has signed a National Letter of Intent with the UMass men's swimming team announced head coach Russ Yarworth. Ziegler is currently the top-ranked 100 freestyle sprinter in the Terrapin State and ranks second in both the 50 free and the 200 free.
"Trevor will be a tremendous addition to our backstroke group," said Yarworth. "He has long legs, a strong body, and a great attitude which all make his upside unlimited!"
A Member of the Retriever Aquatic Club, Ziegler placed fourth at the Speedo South Sectional Championships in 2005. He has career-best times of 53.55 seconds in the 100 backstroke and 1:55.67 in the 200 backstroke. Both of those times would currently lead the Minutemen.
Ziegler is a native of Clarksville, Md., where he attended River Hill High School. He is planning on majoring in psychology at UMass.
The Minutemen will return to action on Friday Dec. 2 when the swimmers head to the Brown Invitational and the divers head to the Rutgers Super Splash Diving Invitational.
