Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts (1-7-0, 0-5-0 Hockey East) dropped Friday's conference game to Northeastern (1-6-1, 1-3-1 HEA) by the score of 2-0. The Huskies scored the eventual gamewinner with three seconds left in the second period, and added an empty net goal for their first win of the season. UMass returns to action tomorrow night when it hosts Boston University at the Mullins Center.

The teams were scoreless through 39:57 of the game, before Northeastern capitalized with a power play tally with three seconds left in the second. With Scott Crowder in the box for holding, the Huskies' Jimmy Russo recorded his third goal of the season with traffic in front of UMass netminder Jon Quick. The goal was assisted by Matti Uusivirta and Joe Vitale for the 1-0 home edge to close the stanza.

In spite of two 5-on-3 opportunities late in the game and pulling Quick with 33 seconds remaining, the Minutemen were unable to knot the game at one and the Huskies added the empty netter for the 2-0 score (Russo from Bryan Esner and Steve Burnstill).

Overall, shots were 31-26 in favor of the home team. NU went 1-6 on the power play, while UMass was 0-10 with the man advantage.

Tomorrow's game vs. BU will be televised live on CN8, with Greg Madden (play-by-play) and Bob Norton (color). Game time is set for 7:06 p.m. For tickets, call 1-866-UMASS TIX.
