AMHERST, Mass. - Charlotte's Adam Ruud nailed a bicycle kick just outside the left post off a corner kick with less than three minutes in reguation as the 49ers and UMass played to a 2-2 double overtime draw at Rudd Field on Friday afternoon. Senior Oral Bullen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman Costa Tsolirides (Dedham, Mass.) each tallied goals for UMass in the first-ever meeting between the two sides.
UMass (5-9-2, 1-3-2 A-10) started the scoring in the 16th minute when Bullen chipped a shot over challenging 49er keeper Tim Seibert from 15 yards out. Fellow senior Ernie Billittier (Mundellein, Ill.) found Bullen streak down the right flank towards goal after a misplay in the Charlotte midfield. The goal was Bullen's first goal since UMass' win over Michigan in the second game of the season.
Charlotte (5-6-3, 2-1-3 A-10) tied the score at the 36:13 mark when Floyd Franks found John Nabers at the back post on an indirect kick following a UMass foul.
The Minutemen regained the lead in the 42nd minute when sophomore Greg Cirillo (Warren, R.I.) elluded several 49er defenders in the left corner and drove toward the goal. Tsolirides crashed towards the net from the top of the 18-yard box and, in the middle of a scrum just in front of the goal, managed to redirect the bouncing ball in for the score.
The 49ers, however, did not back down continually putting pressure on the UMass defense. Charlotte was awarded a corner kick at the 87:16 mark of the game and 20 seconds later, Ruud was able to put home a beautiful bicycle kick after the ball ricocheted off several players before popping up in the air chest high in front of Ruud.
UMass keeper Zack Simmons (Durham, N.H.) made three saves on the day, while Seibert made seven for the 49ers.
UMass will close its home schedule against Richmond on Sunday at Rudd Field. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. and the Minutemen will honor their seniors prior to the game's start. Admission is free to all!
