TORONTO, Ontario - University of Massachusetts women's basketball freshman Alisha Tatham (Brampton, Ontario) has been selected to the Canadian Junior National Team which will participate in the FIBA Americas Under 18 World Championship Qualification Tournament in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Aug. 4-8. Tatham recently averaged 8.5 ppg as Canada lost four exhibition games to Cuba last month. Tatham, who is the sister of current Minutewoman Tamara, will be a freshman on this year's squad. "I'm pleased to announce the 2004 Junior Women's National Team roster for the FIBA Americas Under 18 World Championship", said Head Coach Christine Stapleton. "Our four-game exhibition series against Cuba last week provided our squad with their first taste of international experience and after regrouping at our training camp we are looking forward to heading to Puerto Rico with the goal of qualifying for the 2005 FIBA Under 19 World Championship." Canada will begin play in the FIBA Americas tournament in Pool B alongside Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala. Pool A consists of the United States of America, Puerto Rico, Argentina and Bolivia. The Junior Women's schedule for the tournament is as follows: Wednesday, August 4 versus the Dominican Republic at 6:00 p.m. (EST); Thursday, August 5 versus Guatemala at 4:00 p.m.; and Friday, August 6 versus Brazil at 6:00 p.m. The top two countries in each pool advance to the medal round crossovers. In order to qualify for the 2005 FIBA Under 19 World Championship in Tunisia, Canada must finish the FIBA Americas tournament in one of the top three positions. Should Canada qualify it would mark the first time that a Canadian Junior Women's National Team will have advanced to a FIBA World Championship.
