Amherst, Mass. - Former UMass rower Sarah Jones, along with her partner Kate MacKenzie, finished ninth overall in the women's pair at the Olympics in Athens, Greece. The U.S. pair was third in the "B" Final after leading much of the race. They faded in the final 500 meters, dropping to third, crossing the finish line with a time of 7:13.71. China and Bulgaria finished first and second in the "B" race. The medal winners all came from the "A" race. "Having someone like Sarah compete at the Olympics just shows that people can come through this program and compete at the highest level," said Coach Jim Dietz. Jones graduated from UMass in 1997 and rowed for the Minutewomen from 1996-97. It was Jones second Olympics, rowing for the United States at Sydney in 2000, when she was in the eight. Jones has been a member of the US National Rowing Team since 1997.
