AMHERST, Mass. - Behind two complete game efforts by senior Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) and sophomore Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.), the University of Massachusetts baseball team (16-21, 8-9 Atlantic 10) swept a doubleheader from Temple University (18-22, 6-11), 4-2 and 6-1, this afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. In game two, Torra had a no-hitter through 6.1 innings before giving up a solo home run.
The Minutemen broke into the scoring column first in game one with an unearned run. Senior Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) reached on an error, stole second and then moved to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a ground out by sophomore Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.). The Owls scored twice in the top of the second, but Massachusetts plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good. Freshman Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.) started the rally by reaching on an error. Two batters later, he moved to second on a single by senior Cullan Maumus (New Orleans, La.). Curreri then doubled to right field to score Santos and tie the game at two. Two batters later, junior Curt Szado (Monson, Mass.) reached on an infield single and Maumus was able to score the eventual winning run.
Massachusetts added an insurance run when Maumus led off the fifth inning with a home run to left. Chown settled down to retire 15 of the final 17 batters for his fifth (5-4) win of the season. He allowed four hits ad no walks while fanning seven. Tim Foulkrod took the loss for Temple. He gave up four runs (three unearned) on seven hits and a walk. He struck out four.
In game two, UMass scored four runs in the first inning and that was more than enough for Torra. He took a no-hitter into the final inning, but gave up a one-out solo home run to Pete Colon. That would be the only hit he would allow. Torra walked just one batter and struck out eight as he improved to 5-3 on the season.
Maumus got the first inning rally started with a double down the right-field line. After Curreri walked, senior Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) reached on an error to load the bases. Szado then singled to right field to drive home the game's first run. After a RBI ground out by junior Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.), freshman Michael Weiner (Easton, Conn.) broke the game open with a two-RBI double into the left-center field gap.
After allowing a runner to reach on base via an error in each of the first two innings, Torra retired 11 batters in a row and 14 out of 15 until the home run. Curreri gave the Minutemen some insurance in the fourth with a two-run home to left field.
These two teams will wrap up its three-game series with a single game tomorrow at Noon at Earl Lorden Field.
