Box Score

BROOKLINE, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts baseball team (14-21) scored eight runs on nine hits but it was not enough as Northeastern (21-15) won, 12-8, this afternoon on the Friedman Baseball Diamond. Senior second baseman Cullan Maumus (New Orleans, La.) led the Minutemen with three hits including two runs scored and an RBI.

UMass jumped on the scoreboard first as senior DH Sean Sarno (Stoneham, Mass.) walked and then stole second base. A fly out to rightfield moved him to third, and Maumus knocked him in with an RBI-single to left centerfield. Maumus then advanced to second base on a balk, and went to third on a ground out by sophomore catcher Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.). He would score on a two-out RBI-single to second base by senior first baseman Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) to make the score 2-0, Minutemen.

Northeastern answered with a pair of runs to tie it in the bottom of the first inning, using two doubles and a triple from the first four batters of the game. The score would remain tied, 2-2, until the fourth inning when NU added three runs to lead, 5-2. The hometown advantage would grow again in the fifth inning as a pair of home runs highlighted a five-run Northeastern frame.

Trailing 10-2 in the top of the seventh, the Minutemen battled back score in each of the last three innings, but it was not enough as Northeastern scored one run in each of their last two. UMass trotted out four different pitchers in the game including righty reliever Jeremy Demers (Easthampton, Mass.) who left after getting hit by a line-drive in the eighth inning. He looked to be fine after the game though, and finished the day with three solid innings allowing just three hits.

Curreri and Reynolds each notched a pair of RBI in the game, while Curreri also extended his current hitting streak to a team-leading six games.

UMass baseball returns to action this Saturday, May 8, as it hosts a pivotal three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series against Temple. First pitch of Saturday's seven-inning doubleheader is slated for 12:00 p.m. on Lorden Field. Additionally, as part of UMass' "May Day" festivities, the Athletics Department will celebrate the 50th anniversary of UMass' first appearance in the College World Series. A significant number of players from the 1954 team are expected to be on hand, and will be honored in a brief ceremony in between games.

Finally, with the Massachusetts State Democratic Convention taking place at the Mullins Center all weekend, fans are strongly encouraged to park in Yellow Lot No. 12 located beyond the left field as it is the closest parking lot to Lorden Field.
