Five UMass Rowers Receive CRCA Awards

AMHERST, Mass. - The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced its National Scholar-Athletes and All-Region teams. The University of Massachusetts women's rowing team had two selected to the Mid-Atlantic Scholar-Athlete Team and four to the All-Region Team.
Katie O'Brien (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Catherine Gariepy (Lorraine, Quebec) were named to the Scholar-Athlete team. O'Brien, a senior majoring in Management, has a 3.71 grade point average. Gariepy, a sophomore majoring in Exercise Science, has a 3.65 grade point average. To make the Scholar-Athlete team, a rower must participate in 75% of the season's races in the varsity boat and must have a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average.
O'Brien, along with senior Lizzy Boyle (Darien, Conn.) made the Mid-Atlantic Region's First Team. Senior coxswain Carrie Champigny (Danvers, Mass.) and junior Lea Jakobsen (Copenhagen, Denmark) made the Second Team. To make the All-Region Team, athletes had to be in a varsity eight boat that was ranked in the top six regionally.
The UMass varsity eight finished the regular season ranked 17th in the nation and second in the region.
