KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Massachusetts baseball team (14-19, 6-9 Atlantic 10) was victorious at Rhode Island this afternoon knocking off the Rams, 5-3, in Atlantic 10 Conference action on Bill Beck Field. UMass junior left hander Keith Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) earned his first complete game of the season as he went the distance striking out a career-high 10 batters to help the Minutemen snap a nine-game skid.
UMass got on the board in the top of the first inning as senior DH Sean Sarno (Stoneham, Mass.) walked to start the game, and following a hit from classmate Cullan Maumus (New Orleans, La.) that advanced him to third, Sarno scored on a wild pitch.
That lead would hold until the bottom of the sixth as URI touched up Doherty for a couple of runs as senior Dan Batz laced a one-out single into centerfield to make it 2-2. But the Minutemen, who totaled seven hits and no errors, came right back with two runs in the top of the seventh to regain the lead.
Sophomore catcher Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.) led off the inning with his first home run in more than two weeks, smashing a pitch into leftfield that put UMass back on top, 3-2. Senior first baseman Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) followed with a solo-homerun of his own to mark back-to-back wallops. For Reynolds his was his third long ball of the weekend as he knocked two over the fence in game two of the series Saturday afternoon.
After Doherty faced the minimum three batters in the top of the seventh, the Minutemen added two more runs in the eighth as Curreri lifted a two-out RBI-single into centerfield plating Maumus and senior shortstop Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) to make the score 5-2, UMass.
Doherty came back out for the eighth inning getting all three outs by the swinging wiff. The one run he allowed proved meaningless.
As the Minutemen went down 1-2-3 in the top half of the ninth, Doherty came out of the dugout to finish off the Rams. Inducing a fly ball to centerfield for the first out, Bay State native got the last two batters to strikeout swinging ending UMass' nine-game losing streak, and marking the teams' first 2004 victory over an opponent named the Rams. Curreri finished the afternoon with two hits and three RBI, while Reynolds capped a tremendous week that saw him tally 10 RBI over the past five games.
UMass baseball returns to action this Tuesday, May 4, against Siena. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Lorden Field.
