OLEAN, N.Y. - The University of Massachusetts baseball team (18-24, 9-12 Atlantic 10) lost at Saint Bonaventure (25-19, 14-7 Atlantic 10) this afternoon by the score of 2-0, in conference action on McGraw-Jennings Field. UMass junior starter Keith Doherty notched his second complete game in the loss.
Junior leftfielder Curt Szado (Monson, Mass.) tallied a pair of hits on the afternoon to lead the UMass offense, but by leaving eight runners on base, and having three runners caught stealing, the Minutemen were left with out a run for just the second time this year.
Saint Bonaventure scored in the bottom of the first inning as a lead off single started the frame. Advancing to second on a wild pitch, and third with a stolen base, a sac fly made it 1-0, SBU at the end of the first.
UMass had a chance in the second inning putting the first two batters on, and moving them both into scoring position with a sac bunt. But a strikeout and pop fly to second base got SBU starter Nate Cameron out of the jam.
Senior shortstop Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) hit his second triple in as many games with a two-out triple in the fifth inning. Of course it came right after sophomore first baseman Bill Rankin (Willington, Conn.) was caught stealing at second base. Athas was stranded at third as the next batter fanned.
Sophomore DH Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.) singled to lead off the sixth frame, extending his hit streak to a career-high and current team-high 13 games. He has now reached base in 38 of UMass' 42 games this year, including each of the last 23 consecutive contests. Curreri was caught stealing at second base for the second out of the inning. Additionally, UMass got the lead off hitter on base in four of the first six innings, but could not push a run across.
SBU added its other run with a one-out solo home run in the eighth inning.
In the top of the ninth, the Minutemen got a one-out single from Szado to start things off, bringing the tying run to the plate. Freshman pinch runner Travis Munsey (Durham, N.H.) entered the game, but was forced out on the next play on a fielder's choice allowing junior rightfielder Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.) to reach. Junior centerfielder Derrick Durepo (Ware, Mass.) followed with his first hit of the afternoon, as he laced a single to left field, advancing Twomley to second. With the winning run at the plate, senior pinch hitter Sean Sarno (Stoneham, Mass.) flied out to centerfield to end the game.
UMass baseball returns to action this Friday, May 21 as the Minutemen host Richmond for a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series. First pitch of Friday's doubleheader is slated for 12:00 p.m. at Lorden Field.
