AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore righthander Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) of the University of Massachusetts baseball team was named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week for his performance against Temple on Saturday, May 8. The 6-3, 225-pounder took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Owls, striking out eight and allowing just one walk in the process.

Torra faced 24 batters during the game, only three more than the minimum, and stood two outs away from what would have been the fourth no-hitter in school history. A solo home run by Temple rightfielder Pete Colon on a 3-1 count ended the bid. Currently leading the team with 60 strikeouts in just 53.1 innings pitched this year, Torra (5-3, 5.06) lowered his ERA almost 60-points from 5.63 to 5.06 with the complete game victory. In addition to his strikeout capability, the ground ball-inducing Torra has hit just two batters and has three complete games on the season.

UMass baseball (16-22, 8-10 Atlantic 10) returns to action this Wednesday, May 12, against Central Connecticut. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Lorden Field. Torra's next start will most likely come on Friday, May 14 against Saint Bonaventure. The Minutemen head to Olean, N.Y. for a doubleheader on Friday, followed by a single nine-inning game on Saturday. First pitch on both days is slated for 12:00 p.m.
