AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts baseball team (13-15, 5-7 Atlantic 10) was hammered, 14-1, by Fordham (17-20-1, 8-7 Atlantic 10) this afternoon in Atlantic 10 Conference action on Lorden Field. The contest capped a miserable weekend for UMass as the Rams posted their first ever sweep of the Minutemen.
The Rams scored in each of the first three innings, using a three-run homerun by catcher Jeremy Bourgeois to highlight a four-run first inning, and five hits accounting for six runs in the third inning.
Five Fordham players tallied two or more hits, as UMass mustered just five hits, total, on the afternoon. Fordham starter Rob Semerano picked up the win allowing just one run over seven innings while striking out seven. He did issue five walks though. UMass junior starter Keith Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) took the loss, his first of the year, lasting into the third inning.
Senior third baseman Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) turned in an impressive game for UMass going 2-for-4 with a solo homerun. The one-out blast to right centerfield in the sixth inning was his fourth of the year, and tied him for the team lead.
UMass baseball returns to action Tuesday, Apr. 27, with a nine-inning game against Quinnipiac on Lorden Field. First pitch of the contest is slated for 3:00 p.m.
