Chown and Torra Earn A-10 Honors

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts senior righty Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) and sophomore righty Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) were both named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week for their performance at Saint Joseph's this past weekend. Each starter tossed a complete game four-hit shutout helping the UMass baseball (13-10) team to a weekend sweep against the Hawks.
In game one on Saturday, Apr. 17, Chown (4-2, 3.12 ERA) earned his fourth complete game of the season and the first complete game shutout of his career. He held the Hawks to just four hits and no walks while striking out five and facing the minimum three batters, four times. Chown, who lowered his ERA more than 50-points in the process (3.72 to 3.12) retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced securing the 11th complete game of his career. Held opponents to a .167 batting average. On the season, Chown leads the team with 43.1 innings pitched, he has also totaled 28 strikeouts, is tied for the team-lead with four wins.
In game two on Saturday, Apr. 17, Torra (4-2, 3.79 ERA) tossed his second complete game of the season, first complete game shutout of the year, and the third complete game shutout of his career. He held the Hawks to just four hits while striking out seven and issuing one walk while lowering his ERA almost a full point (4.65 to 3.79). Held opponents to a .160 batting average. On the season, Torra has totaled 46 strikeouts in just 38.0 innings and has hit one batter.
