DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Massachusetts baseball team (9-8, 2-3 Atlantic 10) split a doubleheader at Dayton (13-17, 3-5 Atlantic 10) this afternoon winning the first game, 7-2, and losing the second, 5-4.
In the game one victory, UMass starter Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) earned his third win of the season with a complete game five-hitter. The senior allowed just two runs, one earned while striking out three.
Offensively, sophomore catcher Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.) hit his second home run of the season, as UMass balooned a 3-2 seventh-inning lead to 7-2 with a four-run seventh.
Senior captain Sean Sarno (Stoneham, Mass.), making just his fourth start of the season, went 2-for-3 to round out the UMass attack.
In game two, the Minutemen jumped out to a 2-0 advantage with a pair of runs in the top of the first. That lead would hold until the third as the host Flyers answered with four runs to hold a brief, 4-2 mark.
UMass sophomore starter Matt Torra (Pittsfield, Mass.) went into the sixth inning scattering nine hits and striking out five before turning it over to junior reliever Keith Doherty (Quincy, Mass.). The Bay State native did his job and closed out the inning, but the UMass offense, which totaled 10 hits on the afternoon but none for extra-bases, could not put another run across the plate.
UD pitching held UMass to just one hit over the final 3 and 2/3 innings.
The teams will square off in the rubber game of the three-game series beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Easter Sunday at the UD Sports Complex.
