AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts athletic director John McCutcheon and head football coach Don Brown have announced the 2004 schedule for the Minutemen. The slate features five home games, including contests against both schools which competed in the 2003 NCAA Division I-AA championship game. UMass will also face Boston College for the first time since the 1982 season.
"We are excited about the schedule we are going to play this season," said Brown. "We look forward to the opportunity of facing Boston College in front of many of our alumni in Eastern Massachusetts. It will also be exciting to play games at McGuirk Alumni Stadium against both Delaware and Colgate, the top two teams in the nation last year. This will be a very tough schedule for our team, including a string of four straight road games in October, but we should be up to the challenge."
The Minutemen will open the season with a non-conference road game at Delaware State on Sept. 4. UMass then begins a string of three straight home games on Sept. 11, when it plays host to Colgate. The Raiders advanced to the 2003 Division I-AA championship game, after eliminating the Minutemen from the playoffs in the first round. Following the Atlantic 10 opener against Richmond on Sept. 18 (Band Day), Delaware will come to McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Sept. 25. The Blue Hens won the 2003 Division I-AA national championship, after defeating UMass 51-45 in triple overtime during the regular season.
UMass begins a four-game road trip on Oct. 2, when it travels to Boston College for the first meeting between the schools since Nov. 6, 1982, when the Eagles won 34-21 in Amherst. The Minutemen will then play at James Madison on Oct. 9, at New Hampshire on Oct. 16 and at Rhode Island on Oct. 23. UMass comes back to McGuirk Alumni Stadium for Homecoming on Oct. 30, when it will face Maine. The Minutemen play their final road game at Northeastern on Nov. 13, before wrapping up the regular season with a home game against Hofstra on Nov. 20.
