Winter Scholar-Athletes Announced

AMHERST, Mass. - Sprinter Kwesi Frimpong-Boateng (Accra, Ghana), a graduate student, and senior swimmer Lauren Rowell (Hamburg, N.Y.) were named the winter season outstanding scholar-athletes, announced by the athletic department at the sports luncheon this afternoon.
Frimpong-Boateng ran a time of 6.31 in the 55-meter dash on March 6, at the IC4A Championships, setting a new UMass record as well as career-best mark. He was the leading point scorer for the Minutemen this indoor season with 55 points.
In the classroom, he has maintained a 4.0 GPA as a microbiology major. He was last season's indoor track and field athlete of the year, as well as a Verizon Academic All-American and a member of the Atlantic10 Academic All-Conference team. Frimpong-Boateng is joined on this season's Atlantic10 Academic All-Conference team by teammates senior John O'Neil (North Reading, Mass.) and junior Matt Clark (Worcester, Mass.).
Rowell holds a career 3.61 GPA as an Exercise Science major. She is a member of the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.88) which ranks second all-time at UMass. She alsoranks second all-time at UMass in the 200-yard IM (2:08.13), third in the 100-yard back (58.60) and third in the 200-yard back (2:07.59). holds a career 3.16 GPA as an Exercise Science major. This season at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships she placed fifth in the 100-yard back with a career-best and third all-time at UMass mark of 58.60. She then swam to sixth in the 200-yard IM with a career-best and second all-time at UMass mark of 2:08.13, and ninth in the 200-yard back with a career-best and third all-time at UMass mark of 2:07.59. Rowell was also a member of the second-place 200-yard medley relay team and fifth-place 400-yard medley relay team.
