Box Score

BRADENTON, Fla. - The University of Massachusetts baseball team (3-3) knocked off the University of Iowa (3-7) by the score of 4-2 in ten innings, yesterday afternoon at the IMG Baseball Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Senior pitcher Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) went the distance in the 10-inning affair to earn his second win of the season.

Chown scattered eight Iowa hits on the afternoon, allowing just one earned run and one walk while striking out three. He retired 12 of the last 14 batters he faced and totaled three strikeouts.

UMass got on the board first with a run in the third as senior shortstop Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) lifted a sac fly to center field scoring junior center fielder Derrick Durepo (Ware, Mass.). Iowa would come back with an unearned run in the fourth, and would take the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of lead off hits.

The Minutemen battled back and tie it in the top of the ninth as junior outfielder Jason Twomley (Fitchburg, Mass.), who was 0-for-3 with a strikeout on the afternoon, blasted a one-out triple to right field. Senior third baseman Adam Stojanowski (West Roxbury, Mass.) followed with a sac fly, knotting the score, 2-2.

Following a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth from Chown, UMass wasted little time going after the Hawkeyes. Sophomore left fielder Bill Rankin (Willington, Conn.) led off the inning with a double to left field, and moved to third on a sac bunt by senior Cullan Maumus (New Orleans, La.). Following an infield ground out, sophomore Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.) ripped a two-out RBI double to right field. Senior first baseman Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) added an insurance run with a double to right field plating Curreri.

Chown finished off his first complete game of the season, and seventh of his career, with out allowing a hit in the tenth and inducing a double play, Iowa's third of the game, quelling the Cyclones.

With the win UMass snapped a three game losing streak. The baseball team continues its Spring Break Florida trip with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Wright State this afternoon.
