TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Massachusetts baseball team (2-1) lost at South Florida (11-5), 8-5 this evening at Red McEwen Field. Junior outfielder Curt Szado (Monson, Mass.) and senior captain Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) each tallied a pair of hits as the Minutemen suffered their first defeat of the season.

UMass jumped on the board scoring a run in the first inning for the third consecutive game. A pair of South Florida errors, coupled with a balk and a passed ball, allowed sophomore DH Bill Rankin (Willington, Conn.) to score putting UMass ahead, 1-0.

The lead would double in the third inning, as Maumus doubled home junior outfielder Derrick Durepo (Ware, Mass.), to give UMass a 2-0 advantage. The Bulls would come right back with a run in their half of the third, as junior Bryan Hierlmeier (Tampa, Fla.) knocked a one out, solo-home run to make it 2-1, Minutemen.

That score would hold until the fifth, when South Florida erupted for five runs on four hits, capped by a three-run home run from junior Devin Ivany (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), which knocked UMass starter Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) out of the game.

UMass would rally in the eighth with three runs on three hits, highlighted by a two-out, two-run double from sophomore Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.), but South Florida answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning and held on for the win.

UMass baseball returns to action with game two of the three game series against South Florida. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Red McEwen Field.
