AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts women's tennis assistant coach Celeste Frey will take on one of the region's top male tennis players, Jeff Morneau, in an exhibition match Saturday at the Forest Park Clay Courts in Longmeadow, Mass., at 10:00 a.m. The event, which is free to the public, is being organized by Longmeadow native Tom LeCompte and is sponsored by The Springfield Tennis Club and Fran Johnson's Golf and Racquet.
"I am very excited about this match," said Frey. "Whether it is against a man or a woman, I am just happy to play in a competitive match. I am looking forward to the challenge. I have to stay aggressive to my game and not get involved in his game. I don't see this as a man versus a woman because I have been playing men my whole life. It will just be fun. I'm just going to go there and enjoy it-and try to beat him for sure."
Frey, 27, is among the top women's players in New England. A native of Argentina, Frey played Division I tennis at both Florida International and the University of Mississippi before arriving in Amherst to serve as the assistant to Head Coach Judy Dixon. As a collegiate player, Frey was ranked in the top 10 nationally for both singles and doubles. At Mississippi, she was a member of the Athletic Honor Roll Rebel 3.0 Club and the M-Club, in addition to being an Academic All-American. She was also the recipient of the Student-Athlete Extra Effort Award.
Frey has run instructional tennis camps in Argentina, as well as at Mississippi. She was an instructor for the Mississippi varsity tennis team as well as providing support and management services to the varsity soccer and softball teams.
Frey is a native of Reconquista, Argentina, where she was one of the nation's top-ranked tennis players. She graduated from the University of Mississippi in the spring of 2001 with a bachelor's degree in Family and Consumer Science Dietetics and Nutrition. She is currently pursuing her master's degree in Nutrition at UMass.
Morneau, 32, is a four-time top-ranked New England men's player. He last held the No. 1 ranking in 2000, but his playing time has steadily declined since then.
The rain site for the event will the Grand Meadows Tennis Club.
