AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts senior sprinter Kwesi Frimpong-Boateng (Accra, Ghana) captured the 100-meter dash title at the 127th IC4A men's outdoor track and field championships Sunday afternoon in Princeton, N.J. West Virginia won the team title with 48 points, while host-Princeton was second with 47 points. UMass finished in a tie for 31st place with 10 points.
Frimpong-Boateng recorded the meet's fastest 100-meter dash prelim time (10.58) on Saturday, then came back on Sunday with a 10:47 clocking to beat the field today. The Most Outstanding Track Performer at the 2003 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships has now won eight-straight 100-meter race since a sixth-place finish (out of 156 competitors) at North Carolina State's adidas Raleigh Relays, March 29. Frimpong-Boateng's IC4A 100 title followed gold medal performances at both the A-10 and New England championship meets.
In the javelin, sophomore Mike Carr (Rehoboth, Mass.) placed 10th with a career-best throw of 203-4, a performance that ranks as the fourth-best in school history. Sophomore teammate Mike Antonio (Westboro, Mass.) placed 28th in the event with a mark of 177-6.
Senior Eric Uliano (Haverhill, Mass.) placed 11th in the shot put with a throw of 51-4 1/2, and senior Ken Scheider (Woodridge, N.J.) failed to clear the opening height in the pole vault.
Select members of the UMass team will travel to Fairfax, Va., for the first-ever NCAA Eastern Regional Championships, May 30-31.
