PAWTUCKET, R.I. - University of Massachusetts senior designated hitter Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.) had an outstanding day in the 2003 New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association All-Star Game at McCoy Stadium, going two for two with a run scored and a run batted in. Morgan was one of only two players on the University Division All-Star team to collect two hits in the game.
Morgan entered the game as a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh inning, with the University Division (players from Division I schools) trailing the College Division (players from Division II and III schools) 1-0. With one out and runners on first and second, Morgan lined a single to center field to drive in Vermont first baseman Barry Chamberland, tying the score at 1-1.
Morgan, who remained in the game as the designated hitter, next came to the plate in the top of the ninth inning, with the University All-Stars trailing 2-1. This time Morgan singled to left field, and eventually came around to score the go-ahead run when Connecticut shortstop Brett Burnham reached on an error.
Unfortunately for the University All-Stars, Vermont relief pitcher Jeff Dixon was not able to hold the lead, allowing three runs in the bottom of the ninth, as the College All-Stars came back for a 5-3 victory.
