RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond righthanded pitcher Tim Stauffer allowed only four hits and struck out five in eight shutout innings of work, to lead the Spiders to an 8-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts baseball team in the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship Final Series. Richmond improves to 45-13 on the season, while the Minutemen fall to 26-18 overall. The two teams will continue their best two-out-of-three series tomorrow, May 23, at 1:00 p.m.
Richmond opened the scoring with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning, then added another run in the second on a sacrifice fly. The Spiders then blew the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth with five more runs, to make the score 8-0. Outfielder Vito Chiaravalloti hit a three-run homer in the inning, with outfielder Bryan Pritz adding an RBI single.
UMass junior righthanded pitcher Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) took the loss to fall to 7-4 on the season. Chown allowed six earned runs on 10 hits in 7-1/3 innings of work, while striking out four batters.
Senior designated hitter Chris Morgan (Cranston, R.I.), freshman outfielder Frank Curreri (Weymouth, Mass.) and senior outfielder Matt Boulanger (Westfield, Mass.) all had a single and a walk for the Minutemen, while junior third baseman Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) added a double.
Chiaravalloti led the Spiders by going two for four with a double, a homer and three RBI. Pritz and shortstop David Reaver also had two hits in the game for Richmond.
