Two UMass Baseball Players Earn Atlantic 10 Honors

NORWICH, Conn. - Two members of the University of Massachusetts baseball team have been selected to the 2003 All-Atlantic 10 Conference teams, it was announced this evening at the conference awards banquet. Sophomore lefthanded relief pitcher Scott Ratliff (Helendale, Calif.) was named first team all-conference, while junior righthanded starting pitcher Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) was a second team all-league selection.

Ratliff has a 2-2 record on the season, with six saves and a 4.22 earned run average. He has struck out 24 batters over 21-1/3 innings in 17 appearances, without allowing a home run. Ratliff's six saves this year are the second highest single season total in UMass history, while his 17 appearances rank fifth on the single season chart. In Atlantic 10 Conference games this year, Ratliff has gone 1-0 with a 3.86 earned run average and four saves, while striking out 10 batters in 9-1/3 innings. Over the course of his UMass career Ratliff now has seven saves, the third highest total in school history.

Chown has gone 6-3 so far this season, with a 4.37 earned run average and 40 strikeouts in 55-2/3 innings pitched. He has thrown five complete games in 10 starts this year, while also posting one save in two relief appearances. Chown has been particularly effective against Atlantic 10 Conference opponents, going 6-1 with a 2.74 earned run average and 31 strikeouts in 46 innings. He has also thrown a complete game in each of his last five Atlantic 10 starts. Over the course of his UMass career, Chown now has 14 victories and 102 strikeouts in 164 innings pitched.

UMass currently has an overall record of 24-17, and won the Atlantic 10 East Division title with a 14-7 mark in conference games. The Minutemen have received a first round bye in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, and will face the winner of the George Washington-Rhode Island game at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16, at Dodd Memorial Stadium in Norwich, Conn.
