Three Swimmers Earn Weekly Conference Awards

AMHERST, Mass. - Three University of Massachusetts swimmers have earned weekly conference accolades, announced by the Atlantic 10 Conference this afternoon. Senior co-captains Diana Alberti (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Lauren Rowell (Hamburg, N.Y.) were named co-Atlantic 10 Female Performers of the Week for their efforts at the Nutmeg Invitational, held Dec. 5-7, in New Haven, Conn.
Alberti recorded two victories over the weekend, winning the 100- and 200-yard fly events in season-best times of 59.15 and 2:07.42, respectively. Rowell won two events as well, taking top honors in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard backstroke in respective season-best times of 2:09.93 and 2:09.06. She also took second in the 100-yard back in a time of 59.91. Both swimmers were also members of the winning 200-yard medley relay team that posted another season-best time of 1:49.76. They swam together again on the second-place 400-yard medley relay team, which registered a time of 3:57.44, also a season-best. Rowell swam the first leg, while Alberti swam the third, in both events.
Local standout freshman Greg Chartier (Amherst, Mass.) was awarded his second Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week citation of the season. Chartier won a pair of events over the weekend, placing first in the 400-yard individual medley with a season-best time of 4:05.08, and first in the 500-yard freestyle event with a season-best mark of 4:38.48. He also added a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:54.76. Chartier made his presence felt once again in the relays, as he swam the third leg of the winning 800-yard freestyle relay which posted another season-best time of 7:02.30.
The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be back in action next on Sunday, Jan. 4, as they travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the San Juan Invitational.
