AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - Rich Demers carried 28 times for 139 yards, including two touchdowns, and Jeff Krohn passed for 225 yards and two touchdowns as Massachusetts beat Hofstra Saturday, 27-22.
Massachusetts (6-1) scored on its first series of the game, when Demers ran the ball in from the 5-yard line, completing a 59-yard drive just 2:22 into the quarter. The game was not considered a conference game for Massachusetts.
Hofstra (1-6, 0-5 Atlantic 10) pulled even when Andrew English made a 42-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Irby. Later in the first quarter, Chris Onorato kicked a 22-yard field goal - the first of his three in the game - to put Hofstra ahead 9-6.
Massachusetts went ahead, 13-9, on Krohn's 23-yard pass to Johnson Owumi in the second quarter. Despite three Hofstra turnovers in the second quarter, the Minutemen only came up with seven more points, on a 35-yard drive capped by Demers' 5-yard scoring run, making the score 20-9.
Hofstra scored on a 41-yard field goal by Onorato with seven seconds left in the half, putting the Minutemen ahead, 20-12, at halftime.
Onorato's 36-yard field goal in the third quarter closed the gap to 20-15. With 6:54 left in the quarter, Krohn, who completed 20 of 41 passes for 225 yards, hit Dominique Stewart on a 28-yard pass, putting Massachusetts ahead, 27-15.
After a Massachusetts turnover late in the third, English hit Irby with a 2-yard scoring pass.
Hofstra had the ball on the 50 with a final chance to pull out a victory with 59 seconds to play, but a pass by English was intercepted by Minuteman James Ihedigbo to end the threat.
