AMHERST, Mass. - Despite a solid second half, the University of Massachusetts women's field hockey team fell to Harvard 4-0 at Garber Field Wednesday night. The Minutewomen held the Crimson to one goal in the second half, but they were unable to put together enough offense to overcome Harvard's early 3-0 lead.
"The second half was the best half of hockey we've played all year," Massachusetts Head Coach Patty Shea said. "We really started to come together as a unit."
Harvard scored three goals in the first half on 19 shots. Mina Pell scored the Crimson's first goal at the 15:11 mark unassisted. Later in the half Pell and Jen Ahn assisted Elizabeth Andrews' goal to push Harvard ahead 2-0 at 23:14. Philomena Gambale closed out the first half with another Crimson score at the 33:10 mark off of a Kate McDavitt assist.
The Minutewomen's defense stepped up in the second half, allowing only one Crimson goal in the period. McDavitt scored an assisted goal at the 37:15 mark for Harvard's final score, giving them the 4-0 advantage over Massachusetts.
UMass goalkeeper, junior Ashley Egland (Ilion, N.Y), recorded eight saves for the Minutewomen. Harvard goalkeeper Katie Zacarian tallied two saves on the night.
The Minutewomen will next face the University of Connecticut at Garber Field Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
