EAST LANSING, Mich. - Elizabeth Unger scored two second half goals to lead the Ohio University field hockey team to a 3-2 win over the University of Massachusetts in the rain this afternoon on the campus of Michigan State University. UMass is now 0-7 on the year.
Massachusetts struck first when senior Erika Whiston (Athol, Mass.) took a pass from sophomore Ashley Gilbert (Turner, Maine) and put it in the net at the 12:55 mark. Less than four minutes later, freshman Jaime Bawden (Penticton, British Columbia) scored an unassisted goal, her second of the season, to give UMass a 2-0 lead.
Ohio's Andrea Voros cut the lead in half at the 21:45 mark with an unassisted goal.
In the second half, Elizabeth Unger scored twice less than five minutes apart to give the Bobcats the win. Jenn Watt assisted on the game-winner at the 53:33 mark.
In the net, sophomore Christine Tocco (Reading, Mass.) made eight saves for the Minutewomen. Each team had 14 shots, and the Bobcats had the edge in penalty corners, 11-3.
"We made three mistakes and they were able to capitalize on them," said UMass Head Coach Patty Shea. "We came out hard and put them under the gun, but could not keep up that pace. We are looking forward to returning home and playing in front of the home crowd."
Massachusetts will host Harvard, Wednesday, Sept. 25, in a 7:00 p.m. game at Richard F. Garber Field.
