EAST LANSING, Mich. - Annebet Beerman's goal at the 31:54 mark proved to be the game winner as the sixth-ranked Michigan State field hockey team handed the University of Massachusetts its sixth straight loss to start the season, 5-1 this afternoon.
Down 1-0 midway through the first half, UMass sophomore Caitlin Beresin (Acton, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at the 29:45 mark. Beerman scored her tenth goal of the season just before halftime to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead at halftime.
The second half was all Spartans as they scored three goals en route to the 5-1 victory.
UMass junior goalkeeper Ashley Egland (Illion, N.Y.) made 26 saves in the loss, including 21 in the second half.
Massachusetts returns to action Sunday, Sept. 22, when they face Ohio University at 2:30 p.m on the campus of Michigan State University.
