COLLEGE PARK, Md. - American University handed the University of Massachusetts field hockey team its fifth consecutive loss to start the season, 2-0, this afternoon at the Terrapin Invitational.
After a scoreless first half in which the Minutewomen and Eagles each had three shots, American's Melissa Snyder ripped a slap shot past UMass junior goalkeeper Ashley Egland (Illion, N.Y.) in the 49th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Eagles then added another score with just 36 remaining to put the game away.
In the first half, sophomore goalkeeper Christine Tocco (Reading, Mass.) made one save, while Egland did not record a stop in the second half of play. American outshot the Minutewomen 9-5 in the contest and held the edge in penalty corners, 10-7.
"Today was a very disappointing performance," said UMass Head Coach Patty Shea. "We had a fair amount of chances, but could not capitalize. American had two scoring opportunities and were able to convert each time."
Massachusetts travels to East Lansing, Mich., for a pair of games game next weekend. Up first will be Michigan State on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 1:00 p.m.
