Michigan State Too Much For UMass

AMHERST, Mass. - Michigan State used a swarming defense and got three second-period goals to defeat UMass in the championship game of the UMass Soccer Classic on Sunday afternoon, 3-0.
The loss drops UMass' record to 2-3-0 overall, while No. 23-ranked Michigan State improves to 4-1-0 with the win.
The two teams played fairly even in the first half, with the Spartans mounting the most serious scoring threat. The Minutmen were called for a handball in the penalty box, giving the Spartans a penalty kick. Kellen Kalso's kick sailed above the goal to keep the game scoreless.
In the second half, however, MSU took advantage of a strong southerly wind to break the game open. The Spartans notched their first goal when Craig Hearn blooped in a shot over a charging Colin Burns that gave MSU a 1-0 lead at the 62:18 mark.
MSU pushed their lead to 2-0 moments later when Brett Konley sent a shot to the top area of the goal. Burns got a hand on it, but the ball deflected into the net at the 64:40 mark. The Spartans added a late goal at the 89:45 mark when Jordan Gruber scored off a Konley pass on a breakaway for a 3-0 victory.
UMass will be in action on Wednesday, Sept. 18, when they host New Hampshire at Rudd Field at 3:30 p.m.
