COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The top-ranked University of Maryland field hockey team handed the University of Massachusetts its fourth consecutive loss to start the season, 4-0, this evening in the first round of the sixth annual Terrapin Invitational.
Maryland scored all four of their goals off of penalty corners as the Minutewomen defense did not allow them to get anything going offensively.
The Terps went 17-deep on their bench and put together a 27-1 shot advantage in the victory. Sophomore goalie Kerry Hearsey posted her third straight shutout and senior All-American Carissa Messimer scored her team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the season.
In the cage, UMass junior goalkeeper Ashley Egland (Illion, N.Y.) made 11 saves.
They played well tonight and I am very pleased with the tremendous improvement from the Boston College game," said UMass Head Coach Patty Shea."Now, we need to focus on minimizing the corner goals that we allow. We had our opportunities early to score, but were unable to capitalize."
The Minutewomen will play American University in the final day of the Terrapin Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 11:00 a.m.
