AMHERST, Mass. - Lindsay Domers snapped a 1-1 tie in the 49th minute to propell the Boston University field hcokey team to a 2-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts this afternoon at Richard F. Garber Field.
Freshman Jaime Bawden (Penticton, British Columbia) gave UMass the early lead on a penalty corner at the 27:17 mark of the first half. Senior Sarah Bohonowicz (South Deerfield, Mass.) was credited with the assist.
BU tied the game at 34:48 when Celeste Hubbard scored on a corner with an assist by Lauren Vendetti.
The victory improves the Terriers to 1-0, while the loss drops Massachusetts to 0-1. BU's goalkeeper Susan Harrigan made seven saves in the cage, and UMass' Christine Tocco (Reading, Mass.) and Ashley Egland (Ilion, N.Y.) made two and one, respectively.
"Now that we have our first game experience, we know where we have to go from here," said UMass head coach Patty Shea. "I saw a lot of good things out there today but there are still some simply things we need to improve upon. Today was a great base to build on and if we can eliminate some of the simple mistakes that we made we'll be fine."
The Minutewomen return to action Monday, Sept. 2, when they host New England rival Northeastern at 5:00 p.m.
