AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman lefthander Keith Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) was superb, and the University of Massachusetts baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to claim a season-ending, 4-1 victory over Fordham on Sunday afternoon. The Minutemen finish the season with an overall record of 21-26, and an Atlantic 10 mark of 9-15. Fordham closes out the year at 13-36-1, 6-18.
Doherty was nearly untouchable, allowing just one hit through the first six frames. Fordham had an opportunity to score in the fourth, as they had runners at second and third with no outs. Doherty intentionally walked Bobby Kingbury to load the bases, then struck out Kurt Thomas, and got a pop up and a fly ball to end the inning.
UMass took control of the contest with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff walk and a bunt basehit by Aaron Senez (Springfield, Mass.) put runners at first and second with no outs. Jeff Altieri (Whitinsville, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice, and Curt Szado drove in a run with a base hit. After Connell Clark (Springfield, Mass.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Altieri raced home on a wild pitch. Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) closed the scoring with an RBI single that scored Szado, and gave the Minutemen a 4-0 lead.
Fordham scored a run on a Jon Volosin double in the top of the seventh, but Doherty made a nice defensive play on a bunt to end the inning. The umpires then called the game due to the heavy rains that fell throughout most of the afternoon.
Doherty worked seven innings, allowing one run on three hits, and improved his record to 3-4. Shaun Seales (2-6) got the loss for Fordham.
