PRINCETON, N.J. -- The University of Massachusetts women's water polo team went 3-1 and earned a fifth-place finish at this weekend's Eastern Championship hosted by Princeton University. The Minutewomen's only loss was a 7-5 double-overtime heartbreaker against eventual tournament runner-up Hartwick.
In the first game of the tournament, the Minutewomen took Hartwick, a team they had lost to 13-7 at last week's Northern Division Championship, to double-overtime before falling, 7-5. Massachusetts led 3-1 at halftime, but allowed Hartwick to score three unanswered goals in the third quarter. Junior Kelly Chassy (Morgan Hill, Calif.) led the Maroon and White with four goals. Senior Megan Thompson (Chesterfield, Mo.) recorded the other tally for the Minutewomen. Freshman Amelia Degenkolb (Berkeley, Calif.) made 10 saves in the loss.
The Minutewomen responded nicely to the loss with a 10-2 win over St. Francis in the second round. Junior Mattie Newell (Dillsburg, Pa.) led the squad with three goals. Chassy and senior Anne Dettloff (Barrington, Ill.) scored two apiece, while freshman Melissa Goldberg (Annapolis, Md.), senior Megan Perry (Fresno, Calif.) and junior Amy Black (Fremont, Calif.) also scored for the Minutewomen. In the cage, Degenkolb made seven saves.
In game three, UMass defeated Harvard, 7-5. Freshman Diana Campbell (Baie d'Urfe, Quebec) and Thompson led the squad with two goals apiece. Chassy, Perry and Newell also scored for the Maroon and White. Degenkolb made nine saves in the victory.
In the fifth place game, Massachusetts beat 16th-ranked Brown, 6-5, for the first time in four games this season. Perry scored twice in the upset win, while Goldberg, Newell, Thompson and Black all scored once. Degenkolb made five saves.
Mattie Newell was named a first team All-Eastern Championship selection as announced by the Collegiate Water Polo Association upon completion of the tournament.
The Minutewomen conclude their season with a 15-18 overall record.
