AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts women's water polo team received a No. 18 ranking in the final Collegiate Water Polo Association poll released this afternoon. The Minutewomen, who have not been ranked in the last six polls, received 12 points.
The Minutewomen finished the season 15-18 overall and 3-3 in the CWPA, while coming in fifth place at last week's Eastern Championship. Their only loss was to 14th-ranked and eventual runner-up Hartwick, 6-5, in double-overtime. Their three wins in the tournament came against St. Francis, Harvard and No. 16 Brown.
Junior Mattie Newell (Dillsburg, Pa.) earned first team All-Conference honors as well as being named to the All-Eastern Championship and All-ECAC first teams. She was the lone Minutewoman on any of these prestigious teams.
UCLA finished the season ranked first with 100 points, while Stanford, Southern California, Long Beach State and California-Berkeley rounded out the top five.
Stanford, UCLA, Loyola Marymount and Michigan will compete in the 2002 NCAA Championship, May 11-12, in Los Angeles, Calif.
