Six Women's Water Polo Players Named To The CWPA And AWCPA All-Academic Teams

AMHERST, Mass. - Seniors Anne Dettloff (Barrington, Ill.) and Megan Thompson (Chesterfield, Mo.), juniors Jacy Mackey (Chino, Calif.) and Mattie Newell (Dillsburg, Pa.), sophomore Emily Knight (Watertown, Conn.) and freshman Amelia Degenkolb (Berkeley, Calif.) were all named to the American Water Polo Coaches Association and the Collegiate Water Polo Association All-Academic teams this afternoon.
Mackey, Dettloff and Knight were all recognized in the "outstanding" category with GPA's higher than 3.71. Newell, Degenkolb and Thompson were in the "superior" category with GPA's between 3.41 and 3.70.
Mackey led the Minutewomen with a 3.80 GPA. The English major tallied 18 points this season on 12 goals and six assists. She led the squad with a .652 (12-19) shooting percentage.
Dettloff, an Exercise Science major, followed with a 3.79 GPA. She had 10 points this season and won 12 swim-offs for the Minutewomen in 44 quarters.
Knight rounded out the "outstanding" awards for Massachusetts earning a 3.75 GPA in the College of Arts and Sciences. The goalkeeper recorded 76 saves in 51 quarters for a .490 save percentage. She compiled a 6.20 GAA.
Newell topped the "superior" list for the Maroon and White. The Journalism major led the team with 43 goals and six assists this season. She drew 52 ejections and had 32 steals.
Degenkolb was next with a 3.50 GPA in Electrical Engineering. The goaltender led the team with 159 saves in 93 quarters. She posted a .489 save percentage and 7.14 GAA, while committing nine steals.
Thompson rounded out the honorees, earning a 3.43 GPA as an Exercise Science major. This season, she recorded 29 points on 21 goals and eight assists. She had 27 steals and won 19 swim-offs in 111 quarters.
"I think this is a great tribute for these women," said head coach Donna Heinel. "They worked hard all season, both in and out of the pool, and this is a great way to be rewarded."
The Minutewomen finished the 2002 season with a 15-18 overall record and were ranked 19th in the final national poll. They placed fifth at the Eastern Championship.
