Women's Tennis Drops Three Matches Over The Weekend

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team lost three matches this weekend at the Army Invitational. UMass lost to Army, 5-2, UMBC, 7-0 and Columbia, 6-1. The Minutewomen are now 2-9 this spring.

In the Army game, freshman Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.) and sophomore Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) were both victorious at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Price defeated Ali Rohr, 6-3, 6-4 and Depontes knocked off Marissa Limsiaco, 6-2, 6-3. In doubles, the No. 1 tandem of senior Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) and sophomore Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) topped Rohr and Bundoc, 9-7, but Army won the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches and took the point.

Against UMBC, Horak and Hyams were again victorious at No. 1 doubles as they beat Anita Pushpanathan and Jana Karaskova, 9-7. The Retrievers won the rest of the doubles and singles games to win the match 7-0.

In the first match of the weekend against Columbia, Price was victorious at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 4-6 and 14-12 in the super tiebreaker. Massachusetts lost the rest of the games however, and dropped the match, 6-1.

The Minutewomen will compete in the Cornell Invitational Sunday, March 10. They will face Binghamton at 9:00 a.m. and Cornell at 1:00 p.m.
