DeLand, Fla. -- The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team (2-11) defeated Stetson, 6-1, last night for its first win of the spring season. The Minutewomen won all three doubles games and then took five out of the six singles games to win the match.
At No. 1 doubles, senior Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) and sophomore Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) defeated Julie Dougherty and Jackie Bohannon, 8-2. Sophomore Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) and freshman Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.) breezed by Patti West and Christina Horman, 8-0 at No. 2, while freshman Ashley Smith (Southboro, Mass.) and junior Alison Hagenbuch (Worcester, Mass.) slipped by Jackie Childers and and Johanna Serrao at No. 3, 8-6.
Depontes, Price, Hyams, Hagenbuch and Smith all won their singles matches for the Minutewomen. Horak lost her No. 1 singles match to Jackie Bohannon in a third set tie-breaker, 1-6, 6-3, 8-10.
Massachusetts continues its Florida spring break trip against North Florida later today.
