Football Signs Pierre Odom

AMHERST, Mass.-University of Massachusetts head football coach Mark Whipple announced today that Pierre Odom (Trenton, N.J.) has signed a national letter of intent to attend UMass and play for the Minutemen. With the addition of Odom, UMass has now received commitments from 14 individuals for the 2002-2003 academic year.
Odom played wide receiver for coach Tom Hoglen at Hamilton High School West , where he caught 54 passes for 828 yards and 12 touchdowns during his senior season. He set school single season records for receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, in addition to setting school single game marks for receptions (12) and touchdown catches (three), and the career mark for touchdowns receiving (14). Odom also saw action as a defensive back, recording 105 total tackles, six sacks and three interceptions in 2001. Following his senior year, Odom was named first team All-State by the Associated Press and third team All-State by the Newark Star Ledger. He was also selected first team All-Area and CVC Player of the Year by the Trenton Times, in addition to earning first team All-Area, first team All-CVC and Player of the Year honors from the Trentonian.
"Pierre is an explosive player who can score any time he touches the football," said UMass defensive line coach Sean Spencer. "His ability to run for yards after making receptions will add tremendous excitement to our offense."
UMass returns 16 of 22 position starters from its 2001 squad which finished with an overall record of 3-8 and a 3 6 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Minutemen won the NCAA Division I-AA National Championship in 1998, and claimed the Atlantic 10 title in 1999.
