Cambridge, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's field hockey team was not able to overcome No.3 Wake Forest's offense to pull off the upset victory on Sunday. The Minutewomen fell to Wake Forest 8-0 at the neutral site of Cambridge, Mass. The loss drops UMass to 0-11.
``We did a lot of good things in the second half but we did not play well in the first half," UMass head coach Patty Shea said. "Wake Forest is just a very good team."
Wake Forest tallied 19 shots in the first half, scoring five goals in the opening 35 minutes of play. The Minutewomen stepped up their defense in the second period, holding the Deacons to seven shots and three goals. Massachusetts tallied four shots in the game, all in the second half.
Sophomore Christine Tocco (Reading, Mass.) and junior Ashley Egland (Ilion, N.Y.) both saw time in the goal for UMass. Tocco, who started the game, tallied six saves, while Egland recorded three. Wake Forest's goalkeeper, Katie Ridd, tallied one save in the game.
UMass will next face Providence on the road on Oct.9, and then return home to open the A-10 season on Oct.11.
