UMass Field Hockey Sneaks Past St. Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - For the second time in Massachusetts'(3-15, 3-1 A-10) last three games, sophomore Adrianne Monaco (Oxford, N.Y.) was able to muster up the necessary offense to lift UMass past its opponent. Last Sunday Monaco recorded the winning goal to beat West Chester, 3-2, and on Saturday she found a way to score against St. Joseph's (6-8, 0-3 A-10) to give the Minutewomen the narrow 2-1 victory.

With the game tied, 1-1, Monaco was able to sneak the ball past St. Joesph's goalkeeper, Courtney Huff, with 7:33 left in the second half. En route to scoring the go-ahead goal, Monaco lightly hit the ball which then ricocheted off of Huff and defender Angela Hanna before rolling into the net.

Monaco also had a hand in UMass' first goal, which came at 6:01 into the first half. Senior Sarah Bohonowicz (South Deerfield, Mass.) scored the goal for the Minutewomen on a penalty corner, with senior Sue Jackson (Falmouth, Mass.) and Monaco picking up the assists. Monaco now has seven points on the season, with three goals and one assist. Bohonowicz also has seven total points, with two goals and three assists.

Following the early UMass goal, St. Joseph's found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. At the 40:36 mark senior Kathy Sokalski tallied the Hawks' score from in front of the UMass net.

Junior Ashley Egland recorded four saves in the goal for UMass, and St. Joseph's goalkeeper, Huff, tallied eight saves for the Hawks.

The Minutewomen will conclude their A-10 road-trip tomorrow when they take on Temple at 12:00 p.m.
