UMass Edges Past La Salle For First Victory

Amherst, Mass. - The Minutewomen got on the scoreboard first on Saturday at Richard F. Garber Field and managed to hold onto the lead throughout the rest of the game. After scoring two goals in the first half UMass edged past La Salle, 3-1, to earn their first victory of the season. The win brings the Minutewomen (1-14, 1-1) to 1-1 in Atlantic 10 play.
"It feels great ," UMass Head Coach Patty Shea said of her team's win. "They've worked long and hard for this. They've really worked through a difficult situation, staying positive through the whole thing."
Massachusetts took the lead just over 14 minutes into the first half when Adrianne Monaco's (Oxford, N.Y.) shot rolled past La Salle's goalkeeper, Colleen Bolger, for the score. UMass preserved its lead going into half-time, adding one more goal in the final seconds of the period when Heather Kenney (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) got a shot past the La Salle defenders.
UMass' offense held up in the second half, tallying another goal just over nine minutes into the period. Jaime Bawden (Penticton, British Columbia) took a series of shots in front of the La Salle goal, finally getting one to go in to give UMass the 3-0 advantage.
La Salle made a comeback in the middle of the second half when Gina Sartorio scored at the 56:12 mark for the Explorers. The UMass defense prevented any further scores from La Salle and preserved the 3-1 victory.
The Minutewomen will close out their home season on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. against West Chester.
