UMass Splits With UNH In Opening Meet

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Massachusetts men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their seasons on Saturday at home with mixed results. The men's team defeated New Hampshire 179-109, while the Wildcats edged past the women's team, 166-134.

Ryan Zaucha performed well for the UMass men's team, finishing first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:18.30. He edged out his teammates, Jeremy Dam (10:21.25) and Gavin Frazier (10:29.76) for the first-place finish. Zaucha also finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:14.12. Frazier added to his third-place finish in the 1,000-yard free with a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke.

Also competing well for the UMass men's team were Justin Houck, Dylan Smith and Matt Woodward. Houck placed first in the 100-yard backstroke at 52.89, while Smith beat out teammate, Tommy Keane to finish first in the 200-yard free (1:45.9). Woodward won the 100-yard breast at 1:00.61.

In the women's competition Aimee Bourassa finished first for UMass in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.11) and 500-yard freestyle (5:17). Diana Alberti also performed well, placing first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.04) and Kate Allery won the three-meter diving event with a total score of 252.52.

The UMass teams' next meets will be at Brown on Nov.2.
