AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts football team has earned its first Division I-AA national ranking of the 2002 season. The Minutemen are ranked 20th in the nation by both The Sports Network and ESPN / USA Today. This marks the first time UMass has been ranked since the 2001 preseason polls, when it was rated 21st by The Sports Network and 20th by ESPN / USA Today.
The Minutemen currently have an overall record of 4-2 this season, including a 2-1 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference. UMass is coming off a 20-10 upset victory over No. 2 Maine, which fell to 6-1 (4-1 Atlantic 10) and dropped to eighth in the polls.
UMass returns to action on Saturday, October 19, when it plays host to No. 4 Villanova (6-1 overall, 3-1 Atlantic 10) in a 1:00 p.m. game at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
