UMass Women's Track wins Tufts Invitational

MEDFORD, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Women's Indoor Track team garnered a season-high 249 points yesterday to win the eight-team Tufts Invitational. UMass won eight events including the 55M hurdles, 55M dash, 4x200M relay, 4x400M relay, weight throw, pole vault, long jump, and the 3000M run.

UMass had a strong outing from their freshman as Catherine Ciccollo (Braintree, Mass.) had a season-best 5'0 in the high jump, Brandy Green (Fitchburg, Mass.) won the 55M hurdles with a time of 8.69 seconds, Christina Huff (Springfield, Mass.) won the 55M dash with a time of 7.39 seconds, Christina Bizon (Warwick, R.I.) won the weight throw (15.20M) and Corrine Matthews (Niantic, Conn.) won the long jump at 5.44 meters. Matthews beat out sophomore Chante Soares (New Bedford, Mass.) who finished second at 5.26 meters.

The Minutewomen also swept four of the top six places in the 55M hurdles, including Green's first-place finish, as sophomore Shannon Jackson (Bridgewater, Mass.) came in second at 8.97, sophomore Nichole Nichols (Wayland, Mass.) came in third at 9.02, junior Crystal Therrian (Fairhaven, Mass.) came in fourth at 9.04, and freshman Kristen McGonagle (Hanson, Mass.) came in sixth at 9.43.

In the 55M dash, finishing behind Huff's win, were sophomore Kishana Hudson (Deer Park, N.Y.) at 7.52, sophomore Kyanna Stallings (Newburyport, Mass.) at 7:58, freshman Shannon Williams (Swarthmore, Penn.) at 7.66, Soares at 7.68, and Matthews at 7.83.

Senior Rhianna DaCruz (Pawtucket, R.I.) won the pole vault (11') and junior Julie McGee (Needham, Mass.) won the 3000M run (10:46.20).

UMass also had wins in the 4x200M relay (1.48.86), the 4x400M relay (4:15.28), and a new season-best in the 1000M run from Denise DiPaolo (North Bergan, N.J.) who finished in 3:14.30.

Other teams competing included Tufts University (172), Colby College (122.5), Southern Maine (78.50), Keene St. (68), Westfield St. (9), Salem St. (3) and Worcester St. (2).

The Minutewomen return to action this coming weekend January 25 at Northeastern.
