Track Ninth After Day One

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Massachusetts women's indoor track and field team is tied for ninth place after the first day of the New England Indoor Championship held at Smith College. The Minutewomen tallied 10 points to share ninth place with UMass-Lowell.

Rhode Island leads the two day meet with 33 points, with UConn in second place with 29 points and Northeastern rounding out the top three with 23 points.

Massachusetts tallied its 10 points with solid performances from junior Nastaran Shams (Swamscott, Mass.) junior Chante Soares (New Bedford, Mass.) and senior Crystal Therrien (Fairhaven, Mass.). Soares placed eighth in the long jump at 17'10-3/4", while Shams and Therrien bothed tallied points in the pentathlon. Therrien finished in fifth place with 3,180 total points and Shams finished in eighth place with 2,999 points.

UMass also recorded a fifth place finish in the 4x200 meter relay with a time of 1:44.44.

The New England Indoor Championships will wrap up Saturday evening, when sophomore Christina Huff (Springfield, Mass.) will be looking to place high in the 55-meter dash finals and junior Brandy Green (Fitchburg, Mass.) will be competing for the 55-meter hurdles and pole vault titles.
